The cover pays homage to Victor Hugo Green's The Green Book for Negro Motorists, which provided a list of safe hotels, restaurants, etc. that served African Americans during the Jim Crow Era. The hot air balloons connect to the history of balloons being used for aerial reconnaissance during the Civil War. Similar to how the Union Army used balloons to gain better vantage points and intelligence, the writers in this anthology share hard-won wisdom on rising above workplace adversity.
